Hasankeyf Citadel, Batman province, Turkey, 22. November 2019. For thousands of years, people in Hasankeyf have been living in caves. They are very well suited to the climate in Southeastern Anatolia, providing a cool place in summer and warm retreat in the winter. The story is that, sometime in the 1970s, a Turkish president visited Hasankeyf and could not believe that people were still living in caves and ordered them to be moved to new houses. Having been relocated once, many of these people face the prospect of being uprooted once again when Hasankeyf finally succumbs to the impending floodwaters.
